Mechanic Tip on How To Use SB Chevy Timing Tape
The #1 Piston in Small Block Chevy will always be the Driver's Side Front Piston and is used first to judge top dead center. SB Chevy Standard timing tapes come in sizes of 6" - 6.25" - 6.75" and 8".
Timing tape can be more accurate than a timing tab pointer. On the average car engines the timing may be okay if close enough to Top Dead Center (TDC). On Racing and Hard Working engines it should be TDC as Perfect as Possible, if not, the worse case scenario could be a blown engine. Locate the TDC or "Oº" mark on the harmonic balancer or timing wheel. The "Oº" Mark Line on tape should line up with the "Oº" mark on balancer or timing wheel. Some harmonic balancers may not come pre-marked or the factory mark is off, which has been known, the timing tape will then also be off by the same amount. You will then need to re-calculate your TDC. Select the correct timing tape for your application, each tape is for a certain size diameter damper. The tape is configured to match the Diameter of your balancer. Make sure you know the correct size of the harmonic balancer or timing wheel you're using.
When turning the motor over to find TDC, remove any vacuum hose connected to the distributor and all the spark plugs. This will help when turning the engine over, otherwise it will be difficult in determining if you are up against the stop or resistance from the compression as the piston stop could bend.

Gasoline is highly flammable and explosive under certain conditions. Avoid spilling gasoline, always turn off engine and do not allow flames in the area while installing any parts on engine components. Radiator Water, Engine & Components may be HOT! Always allow to cool off before performing any Maintenance. Before working on electrical system, disconnect battery. Consult your service manual.
